Pool safety barrier requirements in Palm Springs

In Palm Springs, California, pool barrier requirements are established by the Palm Springs Municipal Code, which incorporates the California Building Code. The local ordinances for pool barriers in Palm Springs are as follows:

  1. Perimeter Barrier: A pool must be enclosed by a barrier that separates the pool from the yard or other area. The barrier must be at least 60 inches high and be designed to prevent unauthorized access by children. The fence or barrier may be made of wood, metal, masonry, or other durable materials.

  2. Gate: If the pool barrier has a gate, the gate must be self-closing and self-latching. The latch must be located at least 54 inches above the ground, and the gate must be designed to prevent children from reaching through or over the gate to open it.

  3. Distance: The pool barrier must be located at least 5 feet away from any other structure or fence, and any gates or doors that provide access to the pool must be equipped with an alarm that sounds when the door or gate is opened.

  4. Windows: If any windows in a building provide direct access to the pool area, the windows must be equipped with a barrier that prevents a child from climbing through or accessing the pool area.

  5. Hot Tubs and Spas: Hot tubs and spas must be equipped with a safety cover that complies with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) safety standards.

  6. Additional Requirements: In addition to the above requirements, pool barriers in Palm Springs must meet all other applicable requirements of the CBC, as well as any local ordinances.

It's worth noting that these requirements are subject to change, so it's best to consult with local authorities or a licensed pool contractor to ensure that your pool is in compliance with current regulations.
