What are the differences between bonding and grounding related to swimming pools?

Bonding and grounding are both important safety measures for swimming pool equipment, but they serve different purposes.

Bonding refers to the process of connecting all metal components of a pool electrical system together, including the pool pump, heater, and lights, to create a low-resistance path to dissipate any stray electrical current.

The goal of bonding is to prevent electrical shocks and reduce the risk of electrocution. This is achieved by creating an equipotential bonding grid that equalizes the electrical potential of all conductive objects in and around the pool. Bonding also helps to protect equipment from damage due to stray electrical currents.

Grounding, on the other hand, refers to the process of connecting metal equipment to a grounding system that provides a direct path for electrical current to flow to the earth in the event of a fault. This helps to protect people and animals from electrical shock by directing the current away from them and into the earth.

Grounding is typically achieved by connecting metal equipment to a grounding conductor that is bonded to the pool's grounding system, which is often a metal rod driven into the ground.

In summary, bonding and grounding are both important for swimming pool equipment safety, but bonding is focused on creating an equipotential bonding grid to prevent electrical shocks and reduce the risk of electrocution, while grounding is focused on providing a direct path for electrical current to flow to the earth to protect people and animals from electrical shock.
